What does it really mean to live well? A recent study published in Nature Mental Health brings together perspectives from more than 120 experts across 11 fields to create a shared framework for understanding positive mental health, revealing that well-being extends far beyond happiness alone.
Key ideas:
- A common language for well-being: Researchers narrowed 26 possible dimensions to 19, creating a taxonomy intended to provide a scientifically supported foundation for existing approaches to well-being rather than replace them.
- Six dimensions stand out: More than 90% of experts agreed on meaning and purpose, life satisfaction, self-acceptance, connection, autonomy, and happiness as important dimensions of positive mental health.
- Meaning matters alongside happiness:Meaning and purpose ranked slightly higher than happiness, reinforcing the idea that a good life encompasses much more than simply feeling happy.
- Many paths to greater well-being: The framework offers 19 areas people can consider, from relationships and personal growth to optimism, fun, vitality, achievement, calmness, and safety, rather than treating happiness as the sole measure of a life well lived.
